About Warung Papi Mami
Busan's Jagalchi fish market district is best known to visitors for its seafood stalls, but a few streets back from the water it is also home to a concentration of Indonesian migrant workers, and Warung Papi Mami grew out of that community rather than the tourist trade. The restaurant's current location is in Seo gu's Nambumin dong neighbourhood, on the second floor of the Chungmu Shopping Mansion building, a short walk from the market itself, though its owner Nur started out with a smaller operation closer to the harbour before expanding.
Nur has described opening the warung specifically to give homesick Indonesian workers in Busan a taste of food from home, and the menu reflects that aim rather than any attempt to simplify dishes for a Korean or international audience. It includes mie ayam, the chicken and noodle dish eaten across Indonesia as a quick meal, bakso meatball soup, nasi goreng, nasi rendang and nasi bebek as rice plate options, sop iga beef rib soup, soto broth, and a rotating selection of gorengan, the fried snacks sold from carts throughout Indonesia and eaten here as a side rather than street food.
Nur's business has grown with support from BNI's Seoul branch, which runs a diaspora lending programme aimed at Indonesian entrepreneurs in South Korea alongside financial literacy sessions and help sourcing Indonesian ingredients and spices through the bank's Xpora network, a service set up to connect Indonesian migrant businesses abroad with suppliers back home. That support has let the warung add a second branch, reported in South Korean and Indonesian coverage of her story as being in the Sacheon area, extending a food business that began as a single room serving a homesick crowd into a small operation spanning two Busan area neighbourhoods. No listed phone number or set hours could be confirmed for the Nambumin dong location at the time of writing.
