Australia had never hosted a branch or representative office of any Indonesian bank until September 5, 2024, when PT Bank Negara Indonesia (Persero) Tbk opened its Sydney Representative Office, becoming the first Indonesian bank to establish a presence anywhere in the country. The choice of Sydney was not incidental. Roughly 42 percent of Australia's Indonesian diaspora lives in and around the city, and BNI's own announcements around the opening pointed to this concentration as a central factor in the decision. Unlike a full retail branch, a representative office does not take deposits or process everyday transactions for individual customers. Instead, BNI has described the Sydney office's role as centered on research and market analysis, offering referrals to BNI branches elsewhere for customers who need them, and acting as a point of contact for Indonesian and Australian businesses exploring investment opportunities between the two countries. Earlier plans reported around 2017 had floated Melbourne as a possible base for BNI's Australian operations, with approvals sought from regulators in both countries at the time, but those plans did not proceed and the bank's actual Australian entry came years later in Sydney instead. As of this writing, BNI remains the only Indonesian bank with any form of presence in Australia; neither Bank Mandiri nor Bank Rakyat Indonesia has established a branch or representative office in the country.
