About Gamelan Asmaradana Ltd

Gamelan Asmaradana Ltd is a not-for-profit performing arts and music education organization based in Singapore, incorporated in 2004 to preserve and promote gamelan, angklung, and related Indonesian musical traditions. The group brings together musicians from a wide range of backgrounds, from teenagers to retirees, some formally trained in Western music and others steeped in gamelan, world music, or ethnomusicology.

Rather than specializing in a single regional style, Gamelan Asmaradana supports several distinct Indonesian gamelan traditions under one roof. Its resident Balinese ensemble, Gamelan Singamurti, is described as Singapore's only professional Balinese gamelan group; the organization also runs the Javanese Gamelan Asmaradana ensemble and the Sundanese Degung Singalagena. A fusion offshoot, Dwi Warna, was founded in 2007 and blends gamelan with instruments such as the erhu, guzheng, angklung, and violin; it has performed at the Yogyakarta Gamelan Festival and at Singapore's Esplanade Celebrate December series.

The organization's public rehearsal space is a small shophouse along Kerbau Road in Little India, where Balinese gamelan sessions take place every Saturday evening. Membership is open to newcomers with no prior gamelan experience, and the group has been documented as a deliberately multicultural space where Chinese, Malay, and other Singaporean musicians study and perform specifically Javanese, Balinese, and Sundanese repertoire, styles that originate in Indonesia rather than the related but distinct Malay gamelan tradition found elsewhere in the region.
